Family Is Not Always Family

It's the sheer audacity of people who get mad at victims for finally speaking up. Lately, people are finally coming forward to share the truth about their upbringing. They are laying out the reality of what it was like growing up under narcissism, emotional manipulation, or outright hostility. It's not for clout, they're doing it to heal, to find closure, and to let everyone else trapped in those dynamics know they aren't crazy. Suddenly, everyone has an opinion on "family loyalty." Suddenly, you’re ungrateful, bitter, or doing it for attention. And the outrage is about the child having the nerve to talk about it. For generations, families operated on a contract of silence: Whatever happens in this house stays in this house. It didn't matter if a parent or relative was emotionally abusive, manipulative, or downright cruel, the child was expected to swallow the trauma and carry the shame because family is family. Transparency is a threat to abusive dynamics. When you speak your truth, you disrupt the story they told themselves to feel comfortable. You force them to face accountability, and people who thrive on control will always prefer a lie that protects their comfort over a truth that requires them to change.
