My hands trembled as I pressed myself against the wall, fighting to breathe, fighting to understand what I'd just witnessed. Nathan. Sienna. Together. In ways that siblings should never be. It was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. My graduation day. After years of hard work, sleepless nights, and countless blood donations for Sienna's mysterious illness, I had finally earned my degree. I'd kept it simple, just close family and friends, exactly how I liked it. No surprises, no fuss. Nathan knew me well enough to let me plan it myself, or so I thought. Everything had been perfect until the baker stopped answering my calls. The cake was late, my guests would be arriving soon, and I couldn't have my graduation party without it. So I'd driven to the exclusive bakery myself, the one that only served the elite of the country. I knew my way around the place from previous visits. The shop was empty when I arrived, eerily quiet except for a faint sound coming from the back. As I moved toward the kitchen, the sounds grew clearer. Moans. Passionate, unmistakable moans. My feet froze mid step. A mirror hung on the side wall, angled toward the kitchen entrance. I didn't mean to look. God, I wish I hadn't looked. But there, in the reflection, I saw him. Nathan. My fiancé. The man I was supposed to marry tomorrow. His hands were tangled in long dark hair, his mouth pressed against bare skin, his body moving in rhythm with someone else's. My heart stopped before my mind could catch up. That woman, it couldn't be. But when she turned her head, laughing breathlessly, I saw her face clearly. Sienna. His sister. The girl I'd given my blood to for ten years. The girl I'd loved like family. "Thank you for always choosing me over her," Sienna's voice drifted through the doorway, breathy and satisfied. "My blood transplant is almost complete. We won't need her anymore. No more pretending we're related. The words hit me. I bit down hard on my hand to keep from gasping, tasting copper as my teeth broke skin. What did she mean, pretending? They'd told me they were siblings. For fifteen years, I'd believed it. Nathan's response made my blood run cold. "After tomorrow, we'll finally be free. Once she's arrested, you won't need her blood to survive anymore. She's useless anyway, not smart like you, not beautiful like you. Just a convenient blood bag." My vision blurred with tears, but I couldn't tear my eyes away from the mirror. Sienna laughed again, a sound that had once brought me comfort now twisted into something cruel. "Did the baker include the substance in her favorite cupcakes? The drug test needs to come back positive. It's the only way to get her out of our lives permanently." The room spun. They were framing me. After everything I'd sacrificed, every pint of blood I'd given, every time I'd put Sienna's needs before my own, they were going to destroy me. I stumbled backward, my legs barely supporting my weight as I found my way to the door. Couldn't feel anything except the crushing weight of betrayal pressing down on my chest. Somehow, I made it to my car. Drove to a nearby park. Collapsed against the steering wheel as fifteen years of memories crashed over me like waves. I'd been seventeen when I lost my family in the war. The chaos, the explosions, the screaming, it all blurred together in my mind. One moment I had parents who loved me, a home, an identity. The next moment, I was alone in a foreign country. Every search had ended in failure. Then Nathan found me. Kind, gentle Nathan with his warm smile and promises. His parents had taken me in without hesitation. Sienna had hugged me tight and called me sister. They'd given me a home when I had nothing, loved me when I was lost. Or so I believed For ten years, I'd been Sienna's personal blood donor. Her rare blood disorder required regular transfusions, and I was the only match they could find with type O negative. I'd never questioned it. Never hesitated. How could I, when they'd given me so much? But it was all a lie. Every moment of kindness, every gesture of love, had been planned. They'd never wanted me. They'd only wanted what flowed through my veins. The sun was beginning to set when I finally dried my tears and started the car. I had a party to attend. Guests who expected to see me smile. A fiancé who expected me to eat poisoned cupcakes and disappear from his life in handcuffs. I checked my reflection in the rearview mirror, wiped away the mascara streaks, and painted on a smile. They wanted to play games? Fine. But they'd made one critical mistake: they'd underestimated me. When I arrived at the venue, I went straight to a private room to compose myself. I couldn't let anyone see the cracks in my facade. Today was my graduation day. I was the top student in my department though I'd asked them not to announce it publicly. I'd earned this moment through blood, sweat, and tears. Literally. "Mila! There you are!" Nathan's mother rushed over as I emerged, her face etched with concern that now seemed fake. "We've been looking everywhere for you. Are you alright?" "Just a headache from all the stress," I lied. "Needed some fresh air." Nathan and Sienna walked in at that moment, carrying my cake between them like it was precious cargo. My stomach turned. Sienna bounced over and kissed my cheek, her smile bright. "Happy graduation day, Mila! I'm so proud of you." "Sienna, did you remember to bring Mila's favorite cupcakes?" Nathan's mother asked, right on cue. I watched them all, seeing them clearly for the first time in fifteen years. They all knew. Every single one of them was in on this conspiracy. But why? What crime were they covering up that required my destruction? "Mila, are you sure you're okay?" Nathan's voice cut through my thoughts. His hand touched my arm and I had to fight not to flinch away. "You look pale. You need to stay strong for yourself and for Sienna. She's only stable because of you." Of course. It had always been about Sienna. Every doctor's appointment Nathan had attended, every concerned look, every gentle touch it was all for her. I'd been so blind, mistaking manipulation for love, captivity for family. But not anymore. As I looked at the cake sitting on the table, those innocent-looking cupcakes that would seal my fate, I made a decision. They wanted to play the long game? I'd show them what patience really looked like. I smiled at Nathan, at Sienna, at their parents. Let them think they'd won. Let them believe I was still their naive, grateful little orphan. Because starting tomorrow, everything would change. They'd spent fifteen years setting their trap. Now it was my turn. And I would make sure they regretted every lie.
